I prefer to spread my research over many sites rather than concentrate on one. I've probably missed some but you get my gist. And then there is the National Archives site with free access through my subscription to the NZSG. I also spend a lot of time in the newspaper sites Papers Past (NZ) and TROVE (Australia). I use FMP mainly, followed by ScotlandsPeople, and then the FREE sites FreeBMD/REG/CEN, LancsOPC, FamilySearch and finally Ancestry when they have their FREE offers (I am not referring to the Free 14-day trial). So in that case the annual subscription is being wasted.

I tend to have periods where I have breaks in my searching so I can digest all the information that I have collected recently, update my database, and then plan my next avenue of research. It's often slightly more expensive, but it's an easy way to see what they have, and how much you need befor you commit.Lesley is quite correct, buying credits can be more expensive but that is my preferred option as family history research is a never ending obsession. Not all site require an annual subscription, some will sell you credits to use per search/document. I'm an addict and have both FMP and Ancestry, and also subscribe to The Genealogist, but I'm going to have to scrap one as it is very costly (last year got FMP and TG at bargain prices) but which to scrap? A difficult decision, as all three have some records and search functions unique to them, for sure I'll be renewing my subscription to Ancestry for access to their WY records. Take up the FMP offer mentioned by Megan at #7 and use your local library to search Ancestry, you can then decide which would help the most to further your research. My main focus is West Yorkshire and Ancestry has been a boon to my research.Īs others have said it does depend on your areas of research. If your main research is focused in West Yorkshire then Ancestry would be best for you, they have parish register original images for baptisms, marriages, and deaths from 1500's forward, their marriages go up to 1935, births 1910 and burials 1985, of course not all events are recorded or transcribed, they also have nonconformist records for West Yorks Ancestry can't be beaten but West Yorks in this case applies to the modern WY not the historic, parts of the historic WY which are now known as South Yorkshire don't have original parish register coverage on Ancestry.
